The education system is highly regulated and structured. The Swiss education system focuses on the development of all students, regardless of their social or economic background. The system is decentralized, with the cantons having responsibility for the education of their citizens.
Education is compulsory for all children until the age of 15 or 16, depending on the canton. It is divided into primary, secondary and tertiary levels. Primary education is divided into two levels – lower level (ages 6–9) and upper level (ages 10–15). Secondary education is divided into four levels, including vocational and professional training. Tertiary education is divided into universities and other higher education institutions.
Switzerland has a strong emphasis on the development of social and personal skills through the education system. Students are expected to develop skills such as communication, problem-solving and critical thinking. They are also encouraged to develop an understanding and appreciation of different cultures.
