Cape Coast Castle in Ghana is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is an important part of the history of the slave trade in West Africa. The castle was built by the Swedes in 1652 as a trading post for gold, but was later taken over by the British and used as a fort for slave trading.
Visiting this castle allows one to explore the unique and dark history that is associated with the castle and to gain insight into how the slave trade shaped the history of Ghana. Exploring the dungeons and learning about the experiences of those who suffered in these dark spaces can allow the visitor to gain a greater understanding of the legacy of the Transatlantic slave trade.
